The battle for starting jobs along the Dallas Cowboys offensive line seems to be wide open. Aside from right guard, manned by Zack Martin, the other positions are seeing a heavy fluctuation of bodies.

Competition battles are likely only going to be for center and right tackle. It's doubtful the Cowboys would bench their All-Pro guard or Tyron Smith. As well as their first-round pick, Tyler Smith, who is expected to be the week one starter at left guard.

At the moment, Smith has actually been taking second team reps behind a surprise name; Connor McGovern.

McGovern, in the last two seasons, has shown he is night and day when playing left and right guard. When filling in for Martin, McGovern has shown to be a capable starter on the right side. Displaying plenty of power and a seemingly natural fit.

On the left side, he looks as if he's a deer in the headlights. Not showing the same seamless technique or displays of power. McGovern taking snaps with the first team is purely to make the rookie Smith earn his job.

However, it is worth noting the Dallas Cowboys still display this level of trust in McGovern to even give him these snaps, considering how poorly he played the position in 2021.

Even more interesting is the fact that he is also practicing at center. An area Cowboys fans had clamored to see him at. An area they now will get their chance to see.

The center position is highly contested. Tyler Biadasz is primarily getting the first-team reps, but the competition behind him is deep. Along with McGovern, Matt Farniok, James Empey and Alec Lindstrom are all competing for the most wide-open position on the offensive line.

It should come as a comforting sign for McGovern that the coaching staff is giving him these opportunities. The Dallas Cowboys have had chances to upgrade the swing guard and center positions but are giving their fourth-year flex interior player a real chance.

A chance might be all he needs. McGovern is in a contract year and if he plays center at a closer level to which he plays right guard, it might be too hard to pass up. Biadasz remains the favorite to win the center position but doesn't have the same power McGovern displays.

Mcgovern is getting his chances at multiple spots. Guard is only for now, but will get a real shot inside at center. It will be the most highly competitive spot on the Dallas Cowboys offense, and is going to come down to the final week of the preseason.
