The offensive line is a question mark for the Dallas Cowboys entering the 2022 season. It is difficult to feel completely confident about anybody aside from All-Pro Zack Martin.

Tyron Smith has a well-documented injury history. Tyler Smith is a rookie that is still developing his technique and adjusting to the NFL. Tyler Biadasz and Terence Steele each have their own ups and downs.

As the Cowboys continue to find the right five to protect Dak Prescott and pave the way for Ezekiel Elliott, the team has shuffled the trenches in practice. The latest development is backup guard Connor McGovern practicing at center.

Shuffling along the offensive line

McGovern has been in a competition for the starting left guard spot with Smith all offseason and training camp long. Signs are pointing to the 2022 first-rounder winning the battle, meaning McGovern will begin the season as a reserve.

Instead of just taking snaps at guard, the Cowboys are using the practice time to see what McGovern can do at center. Based on Tuesday's open practice, it appears that the 2019 third-rounder has some promise at the new spot.

Furthermore, the question becomes: why haven't the Cowboys given McGovern reps at center throughout training camp and the preseason? That seems like a wasted opportunity with only one more preseason game remaining. Albeit, he has been competing with Smith.

Still, it is clear that the Dallas Cowboys are continuing to evaluate the offensive line entering the season. The position group was porous at times throughout the 2021 season. Pass blocking was exposed, and run blocking was a weakness at different points.

It is evident that changes need to be made and on-going evaluation is a must. Perhaps we see McGovern see more opportunities at center moving forward. Regardless, depth is crucial for the Dallas Cowboys.
