Dak Prescott is expected to make his return to the field for the Dallas Cowboys this week. Dallas hosts the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon in AT&T Stadium. The timing is perfect for Prescott to get back into action.
Cooper Rush held down the fort very well when Prescott was sidelined. The Cowboys won four straight games and are in the thick of things to make the playoffs, as a result. Nevertheless, there's no better time for Prescott to take back over his QB1 duties.
First off, Prescott is reportedly close to — if not already — 100%. It has been six weeks since his season-opening injury. That lines up with No. 4 being cleared to returning to the field.
“I think he’s got a good chance to be out there," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said of Prescott in regards to playing this week. "He looks good. He looks ready to go.”
Timing is perfect for Cowboys
Furthermore, the Detroit Lions provide Prescott and the Cowboys with an opportunity to get into a groove. Coming off injury and a poor week one showing, Prescott couldn't ask for a better matchup in his first game back.
Detroit has struggled to stop offenses this season. Whether it be through the air, on the ground, or on the scoreboard. That should have Prescott and the Cowboys salivating for Sunday.
"The Lions might be the perfect opponent for this situation," The Athletic's Jon Machota wrote regarding Prescott getting comfortable again. "Detroit (1-4) has the league’s worst defense, allowing 429 yards and 34 points per game."
Additionally, the Lions have failed to get after the quarterback or turn the ball over at a consistent rate. That's despite having one of the league's young bright corners in Jeff Okudah.
"The Lions have only intercepted two passes, allowed opposing QBs a passer rating of 100.8 and recorded a league-low seven sacks. Five of them came against Washington in Week 2, Detroit’s only win," Machota wrote.
Things set up perfectly for Dak Prescott to make a statement in first game back. The Cowboys being his team has never been in question, but you know Prescott is hungry to announce his return to action in a big way.
Prescott will need to shake off some rust, as does any player returning from an injury. Fortunately, the Lions are a great matchup to get Prescott into a groove. And have the Cowboys rolling offensively in the near future.
“We have full belief in Dak’s ability. You know what No. 4 can do," said Cowboys' Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
