The Dallas Cowboys needed to go out and add a playmaker to the offense. That was very clear during the season, when Dak Prescott could largely only rely on CeeDee Lamb at receiver.

Fortunately, the Cowboys did do just that. Dallas traded a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and a fourth-round selection in 2024 for Houston Texans wideout Brandin Cooks. Which immediately fills a big need.

Cooks slides into a wide receiver corps that primarily features Lamb and Michael Gallup. His experience, consistency, and big-play ability are all much-needed boosts for the Cowboys.

He is a veteran and crafty receiver that always finds ways to produce. In fact, he has cleared the 1,000-yard mark in two of his three most recent seasons. That is despite porous quarterback play with the Texans.

Dallas needed to make a move like this for two reasons. Primarily due to the glaring need at wideout outside of Lamb. The Cowboys could ill-afford to not upgrade the position for next season.

And secondly, to help Dak Prescott. Dallas recently cut Prescott's closest friend on the team: running back Ezekiel Elliott. Therefore, the least the front office could do was go out and acquire a player that will make Prescott's job a little easier.

Cooks has proven to be a speedy wideout that is capable of taking the top off the defense. He averages more than 13 yards per reception for his career. Which is an element that the Cowboys have been lacking.

There are still moves that need to be made to fully upgrade the roster. However, the Dallas Cowboys have given Dak Prescott a big reason to smile by trading for the proven Brandin Cooks.
