Earlier this week, the Dallas Cowboys hired Will Harriger as an offensive assistant.
While the news flew well under the radar, the signing could prove to be bigger than many expect as the 40-year-old coach could be of big help to Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
Harriger has experience in the NFL and has worked with Brian Schottenheimer and Dan Quinn in the past. But his most recent stop happened in college with the USC Trojans.
As such, many expect Harriger to bring in some nuggets from Lincoln Riley's renowned offense that took the Pac-12 by storm in 2022. But more important than that could be the quarterback development side of things that the coach can bring to the table.
According to someone familiar with USC football, the Cowboys' new coach was so lowkey you could forget he was even there but had a big role within the team. Especially with quarterback Caleb Williams, who won the Heisman Trophy and is the favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year's NFL Draft.
"(Harriger) was big behind the scenes and there was a lot of talk that for Caleb Williams to end up at USC, his camp wanted a guy like Harriger to be on the staff," says a source out of Los Angeles.
"They wanted his NFL experience working with quarterbacks for Caleb's development for the next level."
Specifically, they wanted Harriger's experience with Russell Wilson. He worked with the Seattle Seahawks from 2014 to 2018.
While it's impossible to know what will be Harriger's specific role with the Cowboys, it's clear that they're bringing in a guy with plenty of NFL and collegiate experience who appears to be good at QB development.
Prescott is likely to benefit from the voices of fresh faces. He'll go from spending the first seven seasons of his career in an Air Coryell-Jason Garrett-type offense to being exposed to West Coast and Air Raid philosophies as well.
