Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Sam Williams has been turning heads in training camp and showing all the hype is legit in the preseason.
His football play is a big reason why everyone thinks of the Cowboys' defensive line as being the deepest position on the team. On the field, there's just not a whole lot of negative stuff to say about the guy.
Off the field? That's a different story. Clarence Hill from the Forth Worth Star-Telegram is reporting that Williams was arrested on Sunday night "on charges of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and unlawful carrying of a weapon."
It's worth noting Williams was practicing with the Cowboys on Tuesday night's open practice. What his arrest means in terms of playing status remains to be seen as the NFL could look into the situation and even assign a suspension.
In December of last year, police issued an arrest warrant for Williams following a car accident in which he was reportedly driving well above the speed limit. That incident and related minor injuries resulted in him missing a game of the 2022 season.
Coming out of Ole Miss, Williams was perceived as a talented prospect with off-the-field issues. The Cowboys have never shied away from taking such players at a discount and that resulted in their second-round pick being used in Williams.
From a pure football point of view, the bet is going great. But the off-field trouble can't become commonplace if the talented player wants to have the career he desires.
