Cowboys keep Donovan Wilson with new three-year contract
The Dallas Cowboys kept one of their best defensive players on the second day of the NFL’s free agency window.
The Dallas Cowboys started off Tuesday with the right move. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, they're re-signing safety Donovan Wilson to a three-year deal.
Wilson's new contract will be worth up to $24 million and it includes two years fully guaranteed ($13.5 million),
In recent history, the Cowboys have not been known for spending big money at safety. But perhaps the key difference this time around is the presence of DC Dan Quinn.
With him at the wheel, the Cowboys have unleashed a highly-effective three-safety hybrid defense featuring Wilson, Jayron Kearse, and Malik Hooker.
Out of those three, it's not so hard to realize that Wilson provides the most versatility to the defense; one of Quinn's most valued traits. That's likely why Wilson was the second defender with the most snaps played last year.
The Cowboys safety will keep terrorizing offensive backfields while wearing the Star on his helmet.
Last year, he recorded seven tackles for loss and five sacks. He's shot out of a cannon versus the run or when blitzing yet also provides solid pass coverage skills.
He also forced two fumbles and recorded one interception in 2022.
In retaining the former sixth-round pick, the Cowboys keep one of their most talented position groups together. Talk about a welcome-back gift for Quinn.
