The Dallas Cowboys are entering new territory when it comes to the running back position. In 2023, for the first time since 2015, Ezekiel Elliott won't be there.
Tony Pollard has taken over as the No.1 option at running back, and rightfully so. Dallas has competition for RB2 duties with Ronald Jones, Malik Davis, and Rico Dowdle on the roster. However, the Cowboys need more.
Of course, guys like Bijan Robinson out of Texas in the first round or maybe Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs in the second would be excellent choices, and the Cowboys would certainly be wise to make those moves if they presented themselves. Fortunately, the Cowboys don't have to stress if neither option is there in the first few rounds.
The 2023 NFL draft is stockpiled with capable players at the running back position. Names like DeWayne McBride out of UAB, Tulane's Tyjae Spears, Devon Achane out of Texas A&M, and Auburn's Tank Bigsby could all be available in rounds three and four.
There are other options as well.
Dallas has shown interest in Roschon Johnson out of Texas, TCU's Kendre Miller, and Zach Evans out of Ole Miss who is a top-30 visit. Also, they met with Pittsburgh's Israel Abanikanda at the NFL combine, and Keaton Mitchell out of East Carolina with his 4.37 speed is someone to consider as well.
The Cowboys have recognized the buffet of options at running back in the draft. So, they can sit back and let the position fall to them with this amount of players to choose from later this month.
With a guy like Pollard on the roster, anyone the Cowboys bring in wouldn't have to do what Elliott did for so many years which is shoulder the majority of the load. Instead, he'd just be another piece to the puzzle, and one that wouldn't have to worry about being worn down.
