There's no telling where the Dallas Cowboys will go with their first-round pick later this month after their stellar offseason of filling holes on their roster. However, one of the players linked to Dallas played his college ball in Austin, Texas which is just three hours down the road.
Bijan Robinson out of Texas has the size, speed, and athleticism to complement Tony Pollard and make the Cowboys running game a force to be reckoned with.
Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus is taking it a step further. He states that Robinson closely resembles Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James which is exceptionally high praise.
When a prospect is one of one like Robinson is on tape at Texas, you have to reach way back into the annals of NFL history for a comp. Robinson’s unique traits are his contact balance and the depth he gets when sinking in his cuts. He’s at a 45-degree angle on some of these.
James was a similar graceful mover at a nearly identical size (6-foot and 216 pounds to 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds for Robinson). The elusiveness and sharp breaks in his cuts — well, you be the judge:
There are certainly some similarities when looking at these videos. Robinson and James have almost the same move when they sink their hips, plant one foot, and change direction without losing speed. Besides speed, they both run with power and are tough to bring to the ground.
James was seen catching the ball out of the backfield in the video above as well. He averaged 306 yards per season as a receiver in the NFL.
Robinson has that ability also. He racked 268 yards a year receiving with the Longhorns, and it could've been significantly higher if he didn't split time with Roschon Johnson for three seasons.
Many in the Cowboys community are cautious about taking a running back in the first round because of how Ezekiel Elliott started to wear down a little after his fourth season. However, a player of Robinson’s talent simply can't be passed on, and if he's there at 26, the Cowboys have to turn the card in.
