The Dallas Cowboys are one of the few teams that can lose their starting running back and not miss a beat. Tony Pollard, now in his fourth season, got the start in Week 8 in place of Ezekiel Elliott, and he didn't disappoint.
Pollard proved he could handle RB1 responsibilities as he tallied 147 all-purpose yards on 15 touches (131 rushing, 16 receiving) and scored three rushing touchdowns. Well, the dynamic playmakers' big day didn't go unnoticed as Pollard was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week, beating out Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans and D'Onta Foreman of the Carolina Panthers.
Pollard will be a free agent in 2023, and he's upping his price with carry this season. The former Memphis Tiger has already set a career-high with five rushing touchdowns and is tied for the league lead in yards per rush for running backs (6.2).
Pollard is not only playing well, but he's also doing things that have rarely been seen in NFL history. Only 17 players have averaged over six yards per rush through the first eight games of a season since 1970. Four of them happened in 2022, which includes Pollard.
The Cowboys haven't had a lot of explosive plays on offense so far this season. However, of the top four, Pollard is responsible for all of them, doing so on three carries and one reception, all totaling at least 46 yards.
The plan before the season was to get Pollard more involved in the offense with his explosive playmaking ability. Dallas has done just that, and Pollard is getting much-deserved kudos as a result.
