As much as it hurts Dallas Cowboys fans to admit it, the team to beat in the NFC happens to be a division rival. The Philadelphia Eagles are legit even though they lost Super Bowl LVII to the Kansas City Chiefs.
While they'll have a high-profile free agent class that's bound to result in some significant roster overturn, Jalen Hurts proved on Sunday (and all season, really) that he is a quarterback worthy of a long-term extension.
"If there were any doubters left, there shouldn't be now," Patrick Mahomes told reporters following the big game on Sunday.
Mahomes is right. Hurts remained cool under pressure even after fumbling in a costly play that the Chiefs returned for a touchdown. He fired back quickly enough and led the Eagles to a 10-point lead at halftime.
The Eagles will still have Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Haason Reddick, and Dallas Goedert, among many other central players moving forward. The Cowboys will have to prove themselves in a major way if they're to keep the infamous no-consecutive-winner NFC East streak alive in 2023.
But some recent news could make the daunting challenge significantly easier.
Cowboys could benefit from NFL's coaching cycle finale
The Eagles might be about to lose two key coordinators this week. Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen is expected to become the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts after the team reportedly told other candidates they were going another direction before the Super Bowl.
That means the prolific play-caller could be out of the NFC East, leaving behind a big question mark with the Eagles. Steichen was a big part of Philly's success this season and his absence will certainly be felt.
The Eagles could also be about to lose defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon if his interview goes well with the Arizona Cardinals, who have yet to decide on Kliff Kingsbury's replacement.
The Eagles defense might've been beaten by Mahomes and the Chiefs, but Gannon's unit had undeniable success in 2022. The Cardinals have not made a decision yet but Gannon is considered a finalist by many.
Although the Cowboys must focus on their own coaching staff and roster building, it is definitely a relevant development in the NFC East if the defending champion loses both its offensive and defensive coordinator.
