Dallas Cowboys' starting nose tackle Johnathan Hankins was carted off the sideline during the third quarter of Sunday Night Football.
The team later announced an important update: Hankins is dealing with an ankle injury. Despite pulling out the cart for the veteran, the Cowboys labeled him as "questionable" to return to the game.
Surprisingly, Hankins shortly returned to the team's sideline later in the third quarter while walking under his own power, per Dallas Morning News' Michael Gehlken.
Losing Hankins would be a big blow to the defense, considering first-roundr rookie nose tackle Mazi Smith is still adapting to the professional level. The former becomes one of the biggest names whose health will be monitored moving forward.
At the time of this writing, the Cowboys lead the Eagles 27-13. It's safe to say Hankins' injury shouldn't derail the team's trajectory within the game but him being back soon will be key for the defense as it gears up to face the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and the Detroit Lions in the next three weeks.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the rookie. The Cowboys believed he could be someone who made an immediate impact on the defense. Now circumstance will force the former Michigan Wolverine to prove them right.
Rico Dowdle briefly goes down
Fortunately, Dowdle's injury seemed to be nothing but a minor scare. After briefly going down on a routine run play in the third quarter, he returned to the playing field minutes later.
The backup running back has been dealing with an ankle injury so it's worth monitoring but for now, he seems to be healthy enough to play.
