The Dallas Cowboys bring back a stellar defense for Dan Quinn and company. Led by Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs, the unit has emerged as one of the best in the NFL at creating havoc and forcing turnovers.
Dallas went out and traded for veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore to bolster the back end of the defense. Additionally, they made it a priority to re-sign Donovan Wilson and keep the secondary intact.
But there's another player in the defensive backfield that is already turning heads. Rookie Eric Scott is making a strong impression in OTAs after the Cowboys traded up for him in the sixth-round. His latest practice is generating a lot of talk.
Scott, a 6-foot-2 and 200-pound corner out of Southern Miss, passes the eye test in the secondary. Especially for Quinn, who has made a career out of developing bigger and longer defensive backs. That was part of what made him worth taking late in the draft.
He was practicing with the first-team during OTAs on Thursday. Scott stepped up in place of Diggs and Gilmore, who were not participating in voluntary practices, opposite of DaRon Bland. There, people took notice as he took advantage of the opportunity.
Scott intercepted quarterback Dak Prescott near the goal line and flashed in coverage. He has flashed in coverage and is using his size to his advantage so far in the offseason.
If the rookie continues to emerge, that could force the Cowboys to make tough decisions with Jourdan Lewis, Kelvin Joseph, and others. But if nothing else, Scott is taking advantage of what is on his plate and could provide Dallas with key depth.
Which is never a bad thing, of course. The Cowboys have been hit with the injury bug in the secondary, so Scott and other stepping up could be pivotal. It's still early in the offseason, but Eric Scott is wasting no time to create buzz.
