It turns out the Dallas Cowboys are more serious about adding UFL talent than we originally thought: Not only is the team working out All-UFL linebacker Willie Harvey Jr. as was reported on Monday, but he'll be joined by a couple other spring pros this Tuesday.
Per Patrik Walker, he Cowboys are also working out cornerbacks Deandre Baker and Gareon Conley, who happen to share a common theme: They're both former first-round draft picks.
Baker is the kind of low-risk, high-reward gambles the Cowboys aren't afraid of making. In 2020, the NFL placed the former New York Giants cornerback on the Commissioner Exempt List after he was "charged with multiple felonies, including armed robbery and aggravated assault, following an incident in May." The chargers were dropped later that year.
Baker broke his femur after he returned to the field as a Kansas City Chief, which ended his season and marked the last time he played in the NFL. He spent the 2024 season with the D.C. Defenders of the UFL, though and bounced back, being named to the All-UFL team.
As for Conley, a slew of injuries led him away from the NFL playing fields and ended up with Baker in the Defenders. He was also a UFL standout and after receiving the chance to prove himself having healed up.
Prior to the 2017 NFL Draft, Conley was accused of rape but was never charged.
Could this UFL standouts provide help at an underrated need?
The Cowboys have a strong starting lineup of cornerbacks, including a couple of All-Pros in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. However, it's worth noting there's no clear-cut number four on the room.
Recently, I made the argument for Israel Mukuamu to be moved full-time to corner to address the underrated need for depth. If any of these two were signed to the Cowboys, they'd have a legit shot at making the roster.
The same goes for Harvey Jr., the leading tackler the team worked out at linebacker. Speaking of, the Cowboys also worked out linebacker Noah Dawkins, per ESPN's Todd Archer. Dawkins had brief stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets, and Chicago Bears.
