The Dallas Cowboys are set to be without Tyron Smith for a big chunk of the 2022 NFL season. Rookie first-round draft pick Tyler Smith appears to be in-line to be the replacement at left tackle.

Despite working at guard since being drafted, Tyler Smith has the opportunity to lock down his spot as the blindside protector for the Cowboys. It's a big task for the rookie, but Dallas seems confident that the former Tulsa standout is ready for the moment.

Now, the Cowboys are reportedly on the verge of adding an outside lineman to the equation. NFL reporter Aaron Wilson revealed that Dallas is looking into trading for New York Jets offensive tackle Chuma Edoga.

Offensive line help on the way for Cowboys

Chuma Edoga was a third-round draft pick out of USC in the 2019 NFL Draft. Only 25, Edoga is still a young player with, theoretically, some upside to tap into. At least, that is what the Cowboys are likely thinking.

Edoga has been in the league for three seasons, but he does not have a ton of in-game experience. The USC product has only played 795 snaps in the NFL. Additionally, he has a reputation as a better run blocker than pass protector.

If this move goes down, it is a sign that the Cowboys want more insurance along the offensive line. Edoga would likely be added to backup Smith or right tackle Terence Steele if another injury occurs.

Fortunately, Edoga did play well in this year's preseason. The rising fourth-year lineman was among the highest-graded at his position in August. That is likely what piqued the Cowboys' interest in search of more bodies.

This trade has yet to go down. However, it appears that it is trending to getting done. As with any deal, compensation is the key.

Such a move would give the Cowboys a young lineman to potentially develop as depth behind a group with some question marks.

UPDATE (3:39 PM): The trade is NOT expected to get done.
