The Dallas Cowboys kept rolling on Sunday with a 22-10 beatdown of the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Of course, the elephant in the room of quarterback Dak Prescott's return remains and has gotten even more prevalent as he gets further along in his rehab from a fractured thumb.
Backup Cooper Rush has won all four of his starts this season, and it's convinced quite a few onlookers to believe the Cowboys should stick with him as the starter even when Prescott is ready.
Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was asked about the disrespect towards the starting status of Prescott after the team's Week 5 win, and he didn't hold back.
“We’re the Cowboys. People always have something to say about us," said Elliott. "F*** em. All we care about is what’s in this locker room, what’s in this building.”
Whew, talk about saying what's on your mind.
Granted, Rush has done exactly what a backup should do, he manages the game and doesn't turn the football over (hasn't thrown an interception this season). However, Prescott has led the top offense in the NFL in two of the previous three seasons, and with wide receiver Michael Gallup back in action, the Cowboys' offense has a lot more potential for success under him than Rush seeing as they have only averaged 22.5 points per game over the last month.
Prescott will throw a lot more this week leading up to the Cowboys' showdown with the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday with first-place implications in the NFC East at stake. Cowboys' head coach Mike McCarthy has been adamant that he wants to see a full week of practice from Prescott before putting him back on the field, and if Prescott can properly grip the ball and be effective this week, he'll likely be back against the Eagles.
The good thing for the Cowboys is that their current four-game win streak gives them some leeway when it comes to Prescott returning. Whenever he is fully ready, with all due respect to Rush, he'll be back under center, and the Cowboys' offense will be a much bigger threat than they are currently.
