Latest Cowboys moves reveal most likely draft strategy
Dallas could be looking to address two specific positions.
The Dallas Cowboys have made a pair of notable moves this week. And both will certainly have a big impact on the team's strategy the remainder of the offseason.
First, the Cowboys traded for Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Dallas sent a fifth-round draft selection in exchange for a veteran defensive back that immediately gives a position of need a significant boost.
Then, the decision was made to move on from running back Ezekiel Elliott. While not unexpected, releasing the veteran rusher officially closes a memorable chapter for the franchise.
These two moves paint a picture of what route that the front office is likely wanting to take in the draft. Because they filled their cornerback need with Gilmore, there is a good chance that the Cowboys add an offensive weapon in the first-round.
Which would likely come in the form of a pass catcher – either wide receiver or tight end. Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid is one name that is being linked to the Cowboys, while Jaxson Smith-Njigba and Jordan Addison are two wideouts worth watching.
Furthermore, the move to release Elliott opens the door for the Cowboys to take a running back in the draft. Bijan Robinson is the popular name if that is the route in round one. But, there will likely be a handful of quality options to choose from at the position later on in the draft.
Adding another back to pair with Tony Pollard certainly would not be a bad idea. Especially since there is no guarantee that Pollard is on the roster beyond next season.
Dallas could obviously make other moves between now and draft weekend. However, these two moves suggest that the Cowboys already know what they will do with their selections.
