The Dallas Cowboys are preparing for a first-round matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite having an extra day of rest by playing on Monday, it is a quick turnaround for the Cowboys.
Playing and beating Tom Brady is never easy. Especially after a disaster of a performance that the Cowboys showed in the regular season finale. Fortunately, this is the time where games truly begin to matter.
Dan Quinn has a tall task ahead of him by preparing for Brady and the Buccaneers. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin is a dangerous receiving duo out wide. Leonard Fournette and Rachaad White presents a problem at running back, too.
As Quinn and the defense prepares for that test, the Cowboys' defensive coordinator has something else on his plate. A familiar obstacle that Quinn had around this same time last season.
Cowboys in familiar spot
Dan Quinn, of course, was in heavy consideration to land the Denver Broncos head coaching position last year. Instead, Denver opted for Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, hoping for an offensive spark.
That obviously did not work out. Denver moved on from Hackett before his first season on the job even ended. Now, the Broncos have their eyes on the Cowboys' defensive coordinator once again.
Dallas has been in this position before when Quinn went through the interviewing process last year. The Cowboys were able to hold onto the successful defensive mind that time around again. There is hope that the same happens this time around.
“I’m having a blast here," Quinn recently said about the Cowboys. "If down the line there’s an opportunity that lights me up, we’ll discuss it then.”
It will be interesting to see what happens this year on the coaching carousel, especially when it relates to the Cowboys. The important thing right now is to not allow this become a distraction heading into the postseason.
