The Dallas Cowboys often get linked to a lot of big-time players who are on the open market or will potentially be on it. That was certainly the case with All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins going back several months, especially with his desire to come to Big D.
He's now available to be signed after being released last month, and so is another major star. Four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook is looking for a new home, and the Cowboys were named one of the possible landing spots for him as well.
Cook made his desire to play alongside Hopkins known earlier this week, saying it would be epic for the NFL. Well, former All-Pro cornerback, Joe Haden, who played 12 in the league, thinks that ideal pairing should happen in Dallas when he was asked on NFL Live on Tuesday.
"I really can, and that would be with the Dallas Cowboys," Haden said. "I know they have a little bit of cap space that they might have to deal with. I think if we get Gallup out of there and then bring in D-Hop and then with the running back position with Ezekiel Elliott being gone, I think that they can fill that void with Dalvin Cook and they'll be perfect to have those two guys on the same team."
The point Haden made about Gallup is an interesting one.
Dallas restructured his five-year, $62 million deal in March to create $7 million in cap space. So, it's clear that they have him in their plans for a while. However, if there's any chance to get a guy like Hopkins, the Cowboys should at least entertain it, and seriously.
The Cowboys moved on from Elliott a few months ago because his price tag was too high. With that said, any hopes of Cook coming to the Cowboys would have to be at a reasonable number. A backfield with Cook and Tony Pollard in it is very enticing, though, and would give Dallas a duo of runners with top-end speed.
The likelihood of this happening is extremely slim. However, if the Cowboys are truly serious about winning a Super Bowl for the first time in nearly 30 years, they need to explore all of their options, and Hopkins and Cook are great ones.
