It can be difficult to move on from somebody like Ezekiel Elliott.
That's why fans, media members, and even former All-Pro players like wide receiver Dez Bryant keep circling back to the discussion of whether or not the Dallas Cowboys should bring him back.
It's been almost three months since Zeke was released in March and he has yet to sign with any NFL team. So far, there are no signs of his status changing anytime soon but with training camp quickly approaching, things might heat up overnight.
Dez believes the Cowboys are the right team to make that happen by welcoming Elliott back to the team.
"You can't talk with casuals," tweeted Bryant referring to fans against signing the former Cowboy. "It only makes sense to bring Zeke back."
The Cowboys themselves haven't ruled out a reunion with the guy they picked fourth overall in 2016 before signing him to a $90 million contract extension in 2019 which won't be played to its completion.
However, head coach Mike McCarthy has talked very positively about Tony Pollard's growing leadership within the running back room and has praised the depth of the group. Not only is the team expected to carry Deuce Vaughn on the roster but Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle, and Ronald Jones are competing for a spot on the roster as well (and one more name we'll get to).
"Don't forget about Rico Dowdle," McCarthy told reporters this week, highlighting he did good things when he was healthy.
Interestingly enough, when talking about adding a bigger running back, UDFA FB Hunter Luepke was the first name that Stephen Jones mentioned last week. Luepke could prove to be a versatile H-back player with responsibilities in blocking, receiving, and short-yardage situations. At North Dakota State, he was part of a power-heavy RB committee.
Whether or not they should bring back Ezekiel Elliott is worth a debate. But it makes sense to think the Cowboys are fine with what they've got right now and might be ready to turn the page following Zeke's decline in terms of explosion.
