The Dallas Cowboys know it will not be easy to win the NFC East in 2022. Although they went 6-0 versus their division rivals last year, they should be facing better squads this time around.
Mostly, the conversation has centered around the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles, who have surrounded Jalen Hurts with an admirable roster.
And still, the New York Giants and Washington Commanders can't be overlooked. The Giants are adding a proven play-caller in Brian Daboll as head coach and the Commanders are upgrading at quarterback with Carson Wentz rejoining the division.
In a league as competitive as the NFL, you simply can't overlook teams. Especially when, in the case of the Dallas Cowboys, your roster took a step back.
However, former Super Bowl Champion Robert Turbin had quite the hot take during Wednesday's episode of NFL Total Access.
"I've got the Washington Commanders winning the NFC East," said Turbin while the rest of the cast reacted in an outraged fashion.
"Carson Wentz is not the greatest quarterback but certainly an upgrade from everybody else that they've had now. And the key here, Ron Rivera. He knows how to rebuild a franchise, he did it in Carolina."
It's safe to say Turbin – the player guest for the week on the show – was bringing the hot takes as he also claimed during the week that Derek Carr was on the hot seat after signing a three-year extension with Las Vegas.
To be fair, Turbin does have a point regarding Carson Wentz. He's clearly a better quarterback than Taylor Heinicke and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Heinicke himself acknowledged that fighting for the QB1 job is not an option.
And even though the last we saw from Wentz was a full-on collapse in Jacksonville that cost the Indianapolis Colts the playoffs, his season wasn't as bad.
An argument could be made that Wentz is the second-best quarterback in the division, depending on where you stand on the Jalen Hurts discussion. Behind Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, the debate is wide open.
But at the end of the day, Wentz finished 20th in EPA/play and 26th in completion percentage over expectation. Sure, he will have better weapons around him but will he find more success than he did under Frank Reich's scheme?
At best, Turbin's take was a wildly bullish stance on Wentz to back up a hot take. At worst, it was an ungenuine opinion to fill a few minutes of football talk in the middle of July.
The Commanders might win more games than some expect, but the biggest threat to the Dallas Cowboys' NFC East title remains the Philadelphia Eagles.
