Less than a week removed from their playoff loss, the Dallas Cowboys are reaching big decisions regarding the coaching staff. And while the coaching staff moves reported on Wednesday have nothing to do with the "Big 3" positions, it's a major decision by Dallas.

The Cowboys are moving on from Senior Defensive Assistant George Edwards. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the former Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator isn't getting a contract extension.

Edwards, who had been on the team since 2020 when Mike McCarthy arrived, seemed to be a legit defensive coordinator candidate for Dallas in the event Dan Quinn moved on to be a head coach elsewhere.

Edwards appeared to have a lot of influence on this team's decisions as the signings of Anthony Barr, and Trayvon Mullen, among others, had ties to him.

I even ranked him as the #1 candidate to step in at DC with Dallas just behind Cowboys secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr. You can check out the other options I listed here.

It's surprising they'll move on from Edwards.

The Cowboys are also moving on from running backs coach Skip Peete, who coached the unit from 2020-2022 and had a previous run in Dallas in the same role from 2007-2012.

The Cowboys have other decisions to reach across the coaching staff as the following coaches have expiring contracts:

  • Joe Philbin, OL.
  • Doug Nussmeier, QB.
  • Leon Lett, DL (assistant).

Meanwhile, Dan Quinn has completed a second interview with the Arizona Cardinals while Kellen Moore is at the same stage with the Carolina Panthers.

Update Thursday 10:20 am: The Cowboys officially announced they're not extending the contracts of Rob Davis (assistant HC), George Edwards (senior defensive assistant/LBs), Leon Lett (Assistant DL), Skip Peete (RBs), Joe Philbin (OL) and Kyle Valero (Quality Control Analytics).
