The Dallas Cowboys have their 53-man roster for the 2022 season. Dallas has a plethora of bodies at several positions, and one of them is wide receiver.
When the Cowboys' roster came out on Tuesday, one name stuck out, Michael Gallup. The former third-round pick in 2018 has been rehabbing a torn ACL and was expected to miss at least the first month of the season. However, Gallup has passed his physical and has been activated off of the PUP list.
The departure of Amari Cooper coupled with Gallup's injury made the Cowboys' vulnerable spot at wide receiver despite drafting Jalen Tolbert in the third round. Outside of CeeDee Lamb, the only receivers with significant NFL tread on their tires are Noah Brown and James Washington and the latter is currently nursing a broken foot.
Gallup passing his physical doesn't mean anyone should be expecting him to suit up for the season opener, he shut down that thought recently. It does, however, give some hope that Gallup won't miss as much time as it was previously thought and that will work wonders for the Cowboys' passing game.
Cowboys' owner, Jerry Jones, is never at a loss for words. On Tuesday, Jones mentioned that if the Cowboys had a certain circumstance attached to their game against the Buccaneers that Gallup wouldn't be a spectator.
"If against Tampa were the Super Bowl, he'd be lining up and playing," Jones said. "We want to be conservative with him. He won't be out there, more than likely, against Tampa. But if it were the Super Bowl, he'd be playing. He's that ready."
Leave it to Jones to get the media buzzing. One thing he said is profound though, and that's the Cowboys being conservative with Gallup's return. Of course, the speed of Gallup's recovery is encouraging but the long-term outlook is what the Cowboys need to be thinking about, especially considering they signed him to a five-year extension back in March.
The clouds are clearing up, so to speak, when it comes to the Cowboys receiver situation.
