The Dallas Cowboys are one of the top teams in the NFL. That's because they have done one thing as well as any franchise in the league for about a decade and that's hit on players in the NFL Draft.

Will McClay, the Cowboys' Vice President of Player Personnel, is the mastermind of the roster building in Dallas, and he's been able to find excellent talent in the early and late rounds.

When ESPN ranked the best cores in the league recently, the Cowboys landed in the No.6 spot.

Roster core: QB Dak Prescott, LB Micah Parsons, WR CeeDee Lamb, G Zack Martin, CB Trevon Diggs

Average core age: 26.8

"The Cowboys' core is a clear display of why they are a true — perhaps even underrated — Super Bowl contender. Prescott isn't at a Mahomes or Allen level, but he's supported by a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in Parsons, a star No. 1 wideout in Lamb and a future Hall of Fame offensive lineman in Martin. And no player has more interceptions over the past two seasons than Diggs (14)."-Seth Walder, ESPN Analytics

The Cowboys have quite a supporting cast around their core as well.

Tony Pollard is set to take over as the No.1 runner with the departure of Ezekiel Elliott. Wide receiver Michael Gallup will get to remind people of his capabilities in 2023 with a healthy offseason, and Brandin Cooks will give Dallas speed and versatility.

Tyler Smith has already turned into a quality starter on the offensive line, and if Tyron Smith can stay relatively healthy, plus Terence Steele returning from a torn ACL, the unit will be extremely good. Mix in their young tight end group of Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and rookie Luke Schoonmaker and this is a well-built offensive unit.

DeMarcus Lawrence may not put up huge sacks numbers anymore but he's one of the best run-stopping edge players in the NFL. The return of Johnathan Hankins and the drafting of Mazi Smith gives the Cowboys multiple space eaters on the interior of their defense and they have guys like Sam Williams, Dorance Armstrong, and Dante Fowler to assist Parsons and Lawrence on the edge.

Leighton Vander Esch is the top guy at linebacker with Parsons playing more on the edge. Damone Clark is geared for a jump in his second season, Jabril Cox has been showing flashes of his talent lately after battling back from a torn ACL as a rookie, and third-round pick DeMarvion Overshown has tremendous upside.

Stephon Gilmore was arguably the key move of the offseason by the Cowboys, giving them another lockdown corner opposite Diggs, and 2022 rookie sensation DaRon Bland plus veteran Jourdan Lewis make the cornerback group very formidable, and that will only get better if Kelvin Joseph keeps improving. Lastly, the Cowboys have what one could argue is the best trio of safeties in the NFL with Donovan Wilson, Jayron Kearse, and Malik Hooker.

They'll need to bring it all together of course, but the Cowboys are certainly of the teams that can win a Super Bowl.
