The Dallas Cowboys always have something going on, and Tuesday was no different.
All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs is close to finalizing a five-year extension with the Cowboys worth up to $104 million which is super exciting. However, there were some injury updates as well.
Right tackle Terence Steele has been cleared to start training camp, cornerback Jourdan Lewis will start on the PUP list, and rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker got designated to the non-football injury list.
Steele suffered his injury late last season. An ACL is something any player has to be careful with, but Steele has essentially been ahead of schedule during his entire rehab so his recovery has been fast and impressive thus far.
After his initial struggles, Steele has developed into one of the better right tackles in the NFL, and the Cowboys can't fully reach their potential from an offensive line standpoint without him.
With Diggs, Stephon Gilmore, and DaRon Bland in the mix, a healthy Lewis gives the Cowboys four ball hawks at cornerback and one of the more talented rooms of its kind in the league. Lewis will be a free agent next year, so he has a little extra motivation to ball out. Plus, Bland, who led the team with five interceptions a year ago, is his main competition for nickel corner duties.
The sky is the limit for Schoonmaker and his underrated athleticism. His upside is arguably the highest in the tight end room, and mixed in with Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot, Dallas can now run its 12 personnel in several different variations.
It's only July so Lewis and Schoonmaker have plenty of time to be ready by the time the season kicks off. For Steele, it's just about being smart and managing his load, at least right now.
Cowboys’ fear comes to life on first day of training camp
This isn’t ideal.
