The Dallas Cowboys are finally going to be able to play one of their biggest acquisitions in free agency. It's taken more than expected but wide receiver James Washington is finally having his practice window activated per Ian Rapoport from NFL Network.
This means the Cowboys have up to 21 days to activate him to the 53-man roster but they can do so at any time. It's worth noting the team freed up a roster spot on Tuesday by releasing DE Tarell Basham.
Washington, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, has been injured since training camp when he broke his foot in practice. The injury was originally expected to keep him out for up to 10 weeks but whether the Cowboys were being careful with him or he suffered a setback is unknown.
What matters right now is that the wide receiver is as close as ever to returning to the football field which could be a huge development for Kellen Moore and Dak Prescott's offense.
While the Cowboys love multiple tight end sets, they also love 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR). While Noah Brown has exceeded expectations this season, especially early in the campaign, he's averaged only three targets per game since Week 5 per Pro Football Reference.
The Cowboys offense could use a vertical threat in their passing game to take the top off of opposing defenses and that's exactly what Washington could provide. While his stats in Pittsburgh don't show it, Washington is able to create separation with his speed and has a tremendous ability to track the ball down the field and adjust to it.
His presence on the field would allow the Cowboys to play CeeDee Lamb in the slot even more often, where he's proven to be at his best.
