Let me start by stating two disclaimers before diving into the obvious decision that the Dallas Cowboys must make following the injury Micah Parsons suffered on Tuesday during practice:
- I don't have any sort of inside knowledge of the injury.
- My medical expertise is about the same as that of a newborn baby.
Having clarified that allow me to say: The Cowboys have to shut off Parsons until the start of the regular season.
On Tuesday, ESPN's Todd Archer reported Parsons "missed the final 11 plays of first-team red zone work and was limping after practice. His lower left leg had a wrap and said he would get it checked out."
"I'm not worried about it," Parsons said via Archer. The pass rusher added that he got kicked in the leg as the reason behind the injury, per Calvin Watkins from the Dallas Morning News.
Ultimately, any decision the coaching staff makes will come down to whatever the Cowboys learn about the nature of the injury. But with less than a month to go for the regular season opener against the New York Giants, why would you risk any sort of lingering injury with the best player on your team? Especially if it's soft-tissue related, being overly patient is the way to go.
Especially when it comes to somebody like Parsons – not that there is really anyone like him – the decision is inevitable: Put bubble wrap around him and sit the guy until Week 1.
After all, he's an elite player who will not lose a step if provided with the rest. And on top of that, you're not convincing him of slowing down in practice in any other way that doesn't involve shutting him down entirely from contact drills. Parsons is always in fifth gear when playing football, whether it's practice or game day. Heck, that's why Mike McCarthy called him the "No. 1 violator" of the golden rule of training camp.
If it's anything other than a cut or something that simply requires a bandaid, I'd love to see the Cowboys give Micah all the rest possible to have one of the best defenders on the field at 100% when games actually matter.
The cherry on top? Maybe the offense can get some reps in without them being totally wrecked by No. 11.
