The Dallas Cowboys surprised many by trading a fourth-round NFL Draft selection to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for former No. 3 overall pick quarterback Trey Lance.
On the surface, the move raised some eyebrows. However, the deal makes sense for both Dallas and Lance. Because the Cowboys have upgraded the room behind Dak Prescott, while Lance gets a fresh start after falling behind with the 'Niners.
But the move puts Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush in a rather tricky situation. Instead of being the unquestioned backup behind Prescott like he has previously been, Rush now has legitimate competition for that role.
Lance will not only round out the position with the Cowboys set to move on from Will Grier, but he will also give Rush a run for the QB2 spot. Although he has played limited snaps, Lance possesses talent and upside that Rush simply does not.
But Rush has the upper hand in knowing the playbook, the system and everything that head coach Mike McCarthy wants. He won four of his five starts a year ago in Prescott's absence and provides value in that regard.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones explained that he sees no immediate role for Lance during his first season in Dallas. But it's more than worth wondering what happens at the spot behind Prescott.
“Candidly, I don’t want to plan on, count on or wish for help from him this year," Jones said when speaking of the addition of Lance to the team's quarterback room.
If nothing else, the quarterback position was upgraded and there is more competition to potentially push Prescott. Whether there is a real battle between Rush and Lance remains to be seen.
