"I really want to win the game," said Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy on Monday. This weekend, he'll lead his current team to the place he used to call home for the first 13 years of his head coaching career.
During the press conference, McCarthy talked about what he learned in Green Bay and what facing the Packers means to him at this stage of his career.
As the Cowboys' head coach opened up about missing the people, he shared that his daughter was born there. McCarthy couldn't help choking up a little bit.
"Why don't you ask me about 12 personnel or something?" asked McCarthy with a laugh.
But while the focus of the press conference was clearly about past days in Green Bay – some of which Cowboys fans don't want to reminisce for obvious catch/no-cath reasons – one particular topic about the future came up.
Last Sunday, NFL Network reported the Cowboys were expected to target free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. After suffering a torn ACL in the Super Bowl, Beckham Jr.
"We really love our receiver group," said McCarthy.
"I've always been a huge fan of (Odell)," added the Cowboys' HC. "Between the guys that I've worked with that have been with New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns, everybody has nothing but great things to say about him."
"Obviously I've always been so impressed with his football-playing ability, I've just heard so many excellent, excellent things about him."
For a moment there, it almost sounded as if the Cowboys had already signed the star receiver. But McCarthy left no room for mistakes as he stated "those are conversations for the future but right now we're focused on our guys."
Dallas is thin at wide receiver, a problem that was made evident in the Week 8 win over the Chicago Bears. With Noah Brown inactive, the Cowboys had to turn to three tight end sets to get their best players on the field.
Behind CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, the team could use an upgrade at both WR3 and depth-wise. James Washington could compete with Brown for the spot, but other than that the Cowboys don't have many more options on the roster. KaVontae Turpin is a specialist that's unlikely to generate consistent separation and run a full route tree while rookie Jalen Tolbert has yet to earn the trust of the coaching staff.
Adding OBJ would be a huge get for the Cowboys and it'd go a very long way in the playoffs.
