One of the more intriguing things when it came to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason was their plans when it comes to the offensive line.
Tyler Smith showed he was able to handle starting left tackle duties as a rookie last season with Tyron Smith on the shelf. However, once Terence Steele tore his ACL and MCL last November, the latter, along with veteran Jason Peters, held down the fort at right tackle.
Well, the Cowboys have shed some light on how things will shape out for the upcoming season. Team owner Jerry Jones said on Monday that Steele will be the swing tackle. This means Tyler Smith will remain the starter at left tackle and Tyron Smith will start at right tackle.
This is certainly a turn of events.
Most thought swing tackle duties would go to Tyron Smith considering his injury history, especially with Steele already showing great progress in his recovery. That would give the Cowboys depth at both tackle spots and leave them to solve their left guard issue in the NFL draft. However, Smith and Steele could likely switch roles at some time during the 2023 season because the former hasn't played every game since 2015.
The Cowboys placed a second-round tender on Steele earlier this month worth 4.3 million. Other teams can reach a deal with Steele but the Cowboys can match any offer that's made. Dallas can choose not to, and if so, they would get a second-round pick as compensation.
If that were to happen all of this is irrelevant. However, if Steele is retained, this situation will be monitored by everyone associated with the Cowboys.
