Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have made tons of headlines during the early stages of training camp. With the preseason set to kickoff next week, head coach Mike McCarthy has hinted at a key move regarding Prescott.
McCarthy explained to the media that the Cowboys are considering shutting Prescott down and not playing him during the preseason. Instead, that would give the Cowboys the opportunity to get a look at other offensive personnel.
But more importantly, it would remove the risk of Prescott being injured in preseason action. Which, of course, is the biggest priority for the Cowboys as the team gears up for week one against the New York Giants.
"We talked about it, but I haven't made a decision," McCarthy told the media regarding Prescott's status for the preseason. "I'm leaning towards not. If I had to bet, I'd bet on no. But I don't bet."
Of course, this isn't some new strategy. Rather, the Cowboys have sat Prescott out of preseason games before. In fact, he did not play in the preseason in each of the previous two years, either.
With Prescott likely to sit out another year, Dallas will be set to turn to backup signal callers Cooper Rush and Will Grier. McCarthy explained that the staff has already been working on a strategy for the offense leading up to the regular season.
"We have it all written up," said McCarthy, per the team's official website. "We have two plans and that's kind of normal. In the first game, we'll look at a certain combination. In the second game, we may flip one or two guys. I feel good about the responsibility and the way we have it outlined. We'll have three games to work it."
