The Dallas Cowboys offense needs to bounce back under the lights of Monday Night Football when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers.
That starts with coaching, sure. Mike McCarthy's offense has been under the microscope all season long given that he essentially let Kellen Moore go in order to call the plays himself. Moore happens to be on the other side of the field tonight and there's no question that's one of the biggest storylines surrounding the showdown.
Ultimately, however, players will have to step up against a struggling passing defense. Quarterback Dak Prescott will have to shake off a rough game in San Francisco last week and he'll need help. Tight end Jake Ferguson is ready to provide it, which is why he shot him a simple yet powerful message earlier in the week.
"I texted (Dak) after the game and I'm like 'I'm with you until the wheels fall off'," Ferguson told reporters in the days leading up to the game. "He's been in that leadership role and it's my job to follow him and run through a brick wall if he tells me to."
Following a rocky start to the season in Week 1 when he had two drops and needed a phone call to "get out of the hole," Ferguson has settled down. Since Week 2, he's caught 18 passes in 21 targets. He is 11th in the NFL in yards after the catch per reception and would rank even better among tight ends with at least 20 targets.
"I'm just going to do my best to keep getting open, keep getting work done, keep getting yards," Ferguson added.
That takes more than just showing up for game day with a better attitude. Ferguson is putting in the extra work. And unsurprisingly, Prescott is always there for it.
"I think him as a leader does a great job of making sure everybody is on their P's and Q's without being overloaded," the Cowboys tight end explained. This week, Ferguson needed to run some routes again that he didn't feel he had down.
"He was like, 'Perfect, let's just get at it after practice'," Ferguson explained. "So we ran a couple of them and then we talked for about an extra 10 minutes about what it's like (…) It just helps when you've got that guy running you through it."
As for the criticism surrounding Prescott after a three-interception performance in an underwhelming game against the 49ers, Ferguson kept it simple.
"There's always going to be criticism," Ferguson told reporters in the days leading up to the game. "Being here for the last two years, you're always going to see some sort of (talk). No matter what it is."
On Monday Night, they got a chance to tone down the national narrative about the Cowboys offense mightily struggling. At least temporarily so.
