The Dallas Cowboys are set to begin training camp in Oxnard, California, this week. It will set the stage for the 2022 NFL season.
Jerry Jones held his press conference to open training camp season. The Dallas Cowboys' owner addressed numerous different topics, ranging from Dak Prescott to Mike McCarthy to Kelvin Joseph and everything in between.
Regarding McCarthy, Jones opened the press conference by speaking on the Cowboys' head coach. In the statement, Jones expressed confidence in the man who he hired to lead America's Team three years ago.
"He wouldn't be sitting here today if I didn't believe he was the man to lead this team to a Super Bowl," Jones told the media in Oxnard on Tuesday.
Mike McCarthy has received his fair share of criticism since taking over in Dallas. The former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl-winning coach has had ups and downs during his Cowboys tenure. He did not have Prescott available for the majority of his first season at the helm.
The way that last season ended — a home playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wildcard — has only sparked more debate on whether or not McCarthy is the right man for the job. Dallas flamed out down the stretch after a hot start to the 2021 season.
Cowboys don't commit to extension
Despite Jerry Jones backing McCarthy, the Dallas Cowboys owner would not comment on extending the head coach. Jones did not want to address the question during the press conference, which is certainly alarming.
Jones explains that there are still years left on the deal, so there is not much of a need to extend things. That is true and makes perfect sense. It wouldn't make much sense to reward McCarthy with an extension at this time, either.
Still, it is still puzzling how Jones handled the question after backing McCarthy to begin things.
The Sean Payton to Dallas rumors have been going on all offseason. The latest set of comments likely won't put an end to that speculation.
