Tyron Smith is suiting up for gameday next Sunday, confirmed Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on 105.3 The Fan.
The future Hall of Fame left tackle will make his 2022 season debut after missing most of the year with a hamstring/knee injury in August. But there's a caveat to the exciting news per the Cowboys owner.
Tyron Smith will apparently be on a pitch count and might not even get the start. The Cowboys have not shied away from rotating players across the offensive line this season and that could be the case again against the Jaguars with Tyler Smith getting the start at left tackle.
With Jason Peters slated to take over at Terence Steele's right tackle spot, the starting (and eventual rotation) offensive line could look like this:
- LT: Tyler Smith → Tyron Smith
- LG: Connor McGovern → Tyler Smith
- C: Tyler Biadasz
- RG: Zack Martin
- RT: Jason Peters
The Cowboys have predicated patience when returning players from injury this season. We've seen the team play it cool with Ezekiel Elliott, Anthony Barr, and even Dak Prescott as they prioritize workload management.
That's been a significant change since Mike McCarthy arrived in Dallas in 2020 and the same philosophy will be applied upon Tyron's return.
As we head into the final four weeks of the season and the playoffs quickly close in on us, changes across the offensive line will be one of the most important stories for the Cowboys. Joe Philbin (OL coach) has had a great season so far considering Tyler's development as well as Steele's and Biadasz's.
Now that continuity has taken a hit following Steele's injury and Tyron's return, he has a new challenge at hand. Make sure this Cowboys offensive line is good enough to go on a Super Bowl run.
