The Dallas Cowboys made a trade on Tuesday. Dallas acquired run-stuffing defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins from the Las Vegas Raiders. The Cowboys parted ways with a late draft selection in the deal.
While that kind of trade won't make the headlines, it was a necessary move. Dallas has a weakness at stopping the run, and Hankins has the ability to shore that up with his 6-3, 320-pound frame in the middle.
All of that said, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently hinted at wanting to make a splash — if such an opportunity to presents itself. Jones even referenced a move that the Cowboys made during their glory years in the 90's.
Prime Time move?
Jones did note that he wasn't really expecting a trade prior to the deadline. However, the Cowboys did go out and make a move on Tuesday for a potential impact player.
Is there a chance that the Cowboys make an even bigger splash ahead of the deadline? Sure. The safe money is to not expect it, though. But you can never say never if Jerry Jones has a big say in these kind of things.
The San Francisco 49ers recently acquired superstar running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers. San Francisco parted ways with valuable draft capital for a move that certainly qualifies as a Deion Sanders-esque move, all things considered.
On a lesser level, the Philadelphia Eagles traded a fourth-round draft pick for pass rusher — and former Cowboys defender — Robert Quinn. That won't make as many headlines as McCaffrey to the 'Niners, but it was still impactful.
There aren't many splashy players available on the trade market. Therefore, the Cowboys may not make a move in the range of a Deion Sanders-caliber player. Still, Dallas has the ability to add a difference-maker to the roster.
Potential Cowboys trade targets
Wide receiver may be the biggest need for the Cowboys. Especially when it comes to star power. Potential trade candidates include DJ Moore of the Panthers, Brandin Cooks of the Texans, Elijah Moore of the Jets, and Jerry Jeudy of the Broncos.
The Panthers will likely hold onto Moore, but that would qualify as a huge, championship-contending move. He would fit into the Cowboys' offense perfectly. Jeudy was in the same draft class as CeeDee Lamb, so that makes a move for him unlikely. Given both are due for contract extensions in the near future.
Cooks would be a highly intriguing move for the Cowboys to look into. The veteran wideout is one of the most underrated at his position across the league. Able to play all over, he would provide the Cowboys with a versatile weapon that would immediately help Dak Prescott and the passing attack.
Again, the safe bet is for the Dallas Cowboys to not make another move before the trade deadline. Still, the Cowboys have shown in the past that they are willing to add a receiver to the roster — like the 2018 trade to get Amari Cooper.
Draft capital, salaries, and other factors will be at play. Jerry Jones doesn't expect a notable move. But, he did admit that he would be all-in on a big splash if it helps the Cowboys contend this season.
