Anyone who has followed the Dallas Cowboys in even the slightest bit knows who Jerry Jones is and how much weight he carries in the NFL.
And on Tuesday, he flexed that muscle as his power was on full display.
His target? None other than New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft.
Owners met on Tuesday and one of the topics of discussion was the structuring of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's contract. According to ESPN's Seth Wickersham, owners voted 31-1 to open negotiations but not after a "heated exchange" between Jones and Kraft.
"The sources said Kraft joined the overwhelming majority in strong support for the measure, with Jones the lone dissenter in the owners-only session, eventually telling Kraft, "Don't f— with me."
Kraft replied, "Excuse me?"
"Don't mess with me," Jones said.
The measure then passed, sources said.
The NFL and a Cowboys spokesman declined comment. A Patriots spokesman didn't immediately provide a comment from the team."
Per Wickersham, a source confirmed that Jones' remark does not stem from past or current beef between the two parties. Instead, it's likely a product of Jones' frustration with the current structure of Goodell's contract.
Jones has been vocal about his disdain for said structure. He believes Goodell's financial targets are "too vague" and primarily, Goodell's bonus(es), need to be more performance-related.
Jones even threatened to sue the NFL and some owners back in 2017 over the matter, something that never came to fruition.
This is obviously a big issue for Jones and it will be interesting to see if anything else comes from it down the line.
