The Dallas Cowboys had to get an early start on their roster cuts on Monday after a disappointing training camp from kicker Tristan Vizcaino, who was released from the team.

"We felt that it's an opportunity to get Brandon (Aubrey) the majority of the reps," head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters following the news.

Aubrey, a former All-USFL who won two championships in the growing spring league, is currently the only kicker on the Cowboys. And although McCarthy confirmed that the team is open to the possibility of adding a veteran later, owner Jerry Jones publicly voiced his bullish stance on Aubrey.

"We're comfortable," Jones told reporters via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. "We’re excited about what we’ve seen, excited about how he got here and he's having a real solid camp and so we're very comfortable going into the season with him."

That's a bold claim to make about the inexperienced 28-year-old who just picked up football in 2022. A former soccer player, Aubrey was a first-round draft pick in Major League Soccer. His successful USFL stint with the Birmingham Stallions has led him to the NFL.

Although he picked up football for the first time as a pro, Aubrey hopes to beat the odds with the Cowboys. To do that, he's been given the toughest opponent a kicker can face by the front office: Himself.

After all, the Cowboys moved on from Vizcaino to see more from him. Sure, indirectly, Aubrey is fighting several players not currently on the team, whether it's veteran free agents or other young ones set to become available come cutdown day at the end of the month.

Per Todd Archer from ESPN, Aubrey was good for 26-of-35 before Monday's practice. He'll get his first chance to introduce himself to Cowboys fans this Saturday when America's Team squares off against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
