The defensive side of that ball has been the focus so far for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2023 NFL Draft. After getting an anchor on the interior in Mazi Smith, the Cowboys brought in linebacker DeMarvion Overshown out of Texas on Friday, one of the more intriguing players in the draft.
The reason that's so is because of Overshown's previous background as a safety in high school and his first two seasons with the Longhorns. With this type of toy, Cowboys' defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has to be salivating over the possibility of how to use Overshown.
A plan has already been put in place. The Texas-born star talked about how he'll be used in Quinn's scheme not too long after he was drafted.
"Any and everywhere," Overshown said, via the team's website. "Right now, we're gonna start at the WILL (weakside LB) position, the last time I spoke with [Dan Quinn]. We really detailed that position, but anywhere, everywhere. He has a plan for me: just moving me around, kinda like what I was doing in college. [It's] kinda what you see right now with the Dallas defense — moving a lot of players around."
This is exactly what should be done with Overshown.
During his days at Texas, Overshown lined up for 1,605 snaps in the box and 205 on the defensive line. His high motor and ability to dissect plays quickly allow him to be an effective run stopper shooting through gaps. Overshown needs to get stronger to set the edge as a run defender but when comes to getting presume on the quarterback he can do that from the outside or up the middle as a blitzer with 52 pressures and 30 hurries recorded in college.
This will help the Cowboys' defense a lot. For one, they've had struggles against the run. Also, with a guy like Micah Parsons dominating from the edge and others including DeMarcus Lawrence, Sam Williams, Dante Fowler, and Dorance Armstrong, Overshown gives Quinn another log to throw on the fire in that regard.
As previously mentioned, Overshown has experience on the third level of the defense with 52 snaps at free safety at Texas. However, it doesn't stop there. Overshown is so versatile that he also tallied 11 snaps at cornerback and got 1,081 total coverage snaps between all the positions he played. Simply put, Overshown is an all-purpose defender.
The next step is to get Overshown in the building and let Quinn get to work on this plan.
