It felt like the narrative was going to haunt us forever and ever. Even with Mike McCarthy leading the Cowboys to back-to-back 12-win seasons, the idea of hiring Payton and ditching McCarthy was a possibility in the eyes of many in Cowboys Nation.
And even the media, by the way. Sportswriter Gary Myers, who covered the Cowboys earlier in his career and wrote a great book titled How 'Bout them Cowboys!, argued on Twitter that if Jerry Jones wanted to win a Super Bowl, he should bring in Payton.
It was the most exhausting tradition in Cowboys Nation, especially since it never seemed like a real possibility beyond the fact that Jerry Jones expressed remorse for letting him go earlier in the successful coach's career.
For a moment, it looked like it'd come back in 2024, too! As the Broncos worked on getting a Payton deal done quietly, many thought the Super Bowl-winning head coach would pass on the coaching cycle and head back to his TV gig.
But finally, the recurring storyline appears to be gone for good. The Denver Broncos are hiring Payton to be their head coach while trading away draft capital to make it happen.
It's a fresh start for Payton and the Broncos.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys head into a do-or-die season with Mike McCarthy after "mutually parting ways" with Kellen Moore. If McCarthy ends up calling the plays as originally reported by Dallas Morning News, it will likely mean he's coaching for his job.
If things go south, the Cowboys could be searching for a coach as early as 2024. But one thing is for sure, Payton's name won't be brought up this time as he'll have his hands full saving the Broncos from the Russell Wilson situation.
