When Mike McCarthy was asked about the status of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore with the Dallas Cowboys going forward earlier this week, he simply said this:
"I really don't want to play this game today, it's been a long couple days, so Kellen Moore, just like the rest of the coaches, will be evaluated," McCarthy said. "Every coach will be evaluated. And the evaluations take more than one day."
Well, the evaluation is over, as Cowboys and Moore have decided to mutually part ways.
Moore had success with the Cowboys as a play-caller. The Cowboys had the top-ranked offense in 2019 and did so again in 2021 while also leading in points per game that season. Moore guided the Cowboys' offense to finish fourth in points in 2022, but for the second consecutive season in the playoffs, they were ineffective when it mattered the most.
The Cowboys won't have to look far for his replacement as head coach Mike McCarthy will shoulder that responsibility. McCarthy called plays for the Green Bay Packers while he was their head coach in 2010 when they won the Super Bowl but didn't want to disrupt the system that Moore had in place for quarterback Dak Prescott.
Moore won't have to wait long for another job as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem to be a possible suitor after firing Byron Leftwich. Also, the Los Angeles Chargers are expected to speak with Moore soon.
This was a move that most thought wouldn't happen but felt was needed. Now, a new offensive era in Dallas begins.
