Dallas Cowboys' superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons found the perfect words to describe the team's loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.
The Cowboys lost for many reasons, particularly their red zone offense and run defense. But that wasn't all that went wrong on Sunday. They also lost because of way too many penalties (10 in the first half) and missed assignments, though.
"I think we just beat ourselves, we just put ourselves behind the eight-ball a couple of times," Parsons told reporters after the game. "It just wasn't championship football."
That final line is the perfect way to frame the loss. Who knows how quickly the Cowboys respond and fix the problems that were made evident during the game? Ultimately, however, Dallas is supposed to be a Super Bowl contender and as one it shouldn't be shooting itself in the foot against a 0-2 Cardinals team.
It's a long season and this loss is far from the end of the world or well, the Cowboys' 2023 season. But it is a reminder that they have many things to clean up before their bid to be known as the best team in the NFL is taken seriously.
"It's just a game where it never came to our favor," Parsons explained. "It never came to where (Cardinals QB Joshua Dobbs) had to drop back and think to make the big throw. It was always he could've done whatever he wanted to, the whole playbook was open."
It's true. The Cowboys' run defense had its worst game of the season mainly because it was the first time they were really tested. In the previous two weeks, early leads allowed Parsons and friends to pin their ears back and get after opposing quarterbacks.
Moving forward, the Cowboys' emphasis on stopping the run must yield results.
