When the Dallas Cowboys visit the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night at Lumen Field for Week 2 of the NFL preseason, don't expect quarterback Dak Prescott to take the field.
And maybe, don't expect to see Cooper Rush, either.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said third-string quarterback Will Grier would receive a "super long" look this weekend, per Patrik Walker from DallasCowboys.com.
I'll admit the comment from McCarthy caught me off guard because we already got a "super long" look from Grier last weekend. Specifically, we saw him for 55 plays, 76% of the offensive snaps against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
That's why, if I had to bet, I'd say the Cowboys are sitting Rush for Week 2 of the preseason. Either that or we'll see him for fewer than three drives, which is what the well-established backup saw last Saturday at AT&T Stadium.
Rush, who signed a two-year contract earlier this year, is set to make $2.75 million in 2023, well above Grier's minimum salary. He's the clear-cut front-runner to back up Prescott when the season starts, having proven to be the safest option of the two.
Against the Jaguars, Grier showed some of his potential by putting together a solid drive where he consistently found wide receiver Dennis Houston before letting rookie RB Deuce Vaughn take over.
But it's Grier's occasional wild misfires that will likely keep him from putting up a legit battle for QB2. Perhaps this is an opportunity to let Rush get reps with the second-team offense for him to make a case for himself. After all, he's got seemingly better athleticism and a better arm. If he can be more consistent, perhaps he could turn things around.
The Cowboys appear ready to give him the chance.
