The Dallas Cowboys were looking for a guy in the return game last offseason. They would sign KaVontae Turpin, who just came off of an MVP season in the USFL.
Turpin took the NFL and Cowboys fans by storm when he ran a kickoff and a punt back for touchdowns against the Los Angeles Chargers during the preseason. Turpin's speed was on display during practice as well as he showed some juice in the passing game.
Turpin's ability to make plays on offense was what people wanted to see in 2022, no disrespect to his skills as a returner. However, Turpin only logged 62 offensive plays and gained a putrid 26 yards on four touches.
It seems like that's going to change in 2023.
"You gotta remember when Turp came to us, you know the timing of it. So, just what he was able to accomplish on special teams really speaks for itself, he was a Pro Bowl selection," said McCarthy.
"To the earlier question about the second-year jump, I mean, he needs to take a second-year jump offensively. And that's complete understanding of the offense in the perimeter because he's definitely a piece you want to move around. So, we don't just want to be in a position where he has to line up in one spot and that's what we're working on now in the offseason."
Turpin didn't have long before his USFL season to get ready for the long haul of the Cowboys grind, as in less than two weeks. So, according to Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com when he did his weekly segment on the A To Z Sports Dallas Morning show called "The Scientific Method" on Thursday, McCarthy told Turpin that they didn't want to burn him out and that the offensive packages that will involve him will get used more in 2023 once he got to rest.
That has been the case in OTAs as Turpin was gotten more reps with the second-team offense as well as the first-team and it hasn't just been gadget plays like a Jet Sweep. Brandin Cooks already adds more speed to the Cowboys' offense from the wide receiver position so Turpin getting more involved would give the Cowboys multiple burners to attack with downfield.
It's unsure how the 2023 season will play out but the Cowboys will be exciting to watch regardless, especially offensively.
