The Dallas Cowboys are all in on running back Tony Pollard as they transition from Ezekiel Elliott. Behind Pollard, there are guys like Ronald Jones, Malik Davis, and rookie Duece Vaughn who will battle to be his main running mate.
There was a huge announcement regarding one of the most explosive runners in today's NFL on Thursday, though. Dalvin Cook, a second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, is set to be released soon.
Cook has had some trouble with injuries but he's put together four consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns and has just under 6,000 yards for his career with 47 rushing touchdowns (52 total scores).
Although the Cowboys have plenty of bodies in their running back competition, they were named the third-best landing spot for Cook once he's a free agent.
"Personally, I think the Cowboys’ biggest problem right now is pass protection from the running back position, which is why I’d still consider re-signing Elliott if he is amenable to lesser contract terms. Tony Pollard is an excellent pass protector, but what happens if he struggles to return from his broken fibula or reaggravates the condition? Cook is less of a backfield bodyguard, but he would offer the Cowboys division-altering speed and much-needed depth. I think Mike McCarthy was always going to be more comfortable with a secondary option with experience."-Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated
Orr is on point about Cook in terms of his pass blocking, he's no Elliott in that regard. However, the Cowboys have lacked speed on offense for eons and Cook would instantly provide a threat to hit his head on the goalpost every time he touches the football much like Pollard, Vaughn, and wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Being that it's the Cowboys that are being linked to Cook there's something very important to consider, his price tag. With Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones controlling the "pie" as he puts it, and his frugal history of spending, Cook is out of the question for Dallas if he's wanting major dollars.
According to BetOnline.ag, the Cowboys have the fifth-best odds to land Cook. So, we shall see what happens.
