Dallas Cowboys training camp is always filled with key positional battles up and down the roster. From backup quarterback to offensive line to the secondary, there is never any shortage of developments to track.

That's more of the same this season. With the team set to kickoff preseason football in one week, the competition is at an all-time high. Especially for newcomers that are looking to make the roster and potentially carve out a role.

Among those that fit that description is rookie wide receiver Jalen Brooks. Wide receiver is a position that has been boosted, namely by the trade for Brandin Cooks. But that has not prevented Scott from turning heads in training camp.

While Brooks has his work cut out for him in terms of being one of the pass catchers to make the roster for his receiving ability, he has found another route to impress. That's on special teams.

According to Cowboys insider Todd Archer, the first-year player out of South Carolina is making an impression in that department. In fact, he even beat special teams contributors CJ Goodwin and Kelvin Joseph in punt coverage.

Of course, special teams is very important in the NFL. Especially to Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel. And that's where Brooks is really shining. Dallas Morning News writer Michael Gehlken stated that the rookie "continues to solidify (his) case for (the) 53-man roster."

“I’m impressed with how fast he’s picked it up. I’m excited to see him in pads," Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said about the rookie out of South Carolina earlier in training camp.

Brooks was the last selection of the Dallas Cowboys' draft class this past April. He has not taken long to make a strong impression in practice and could be on track to making the roster thanks to his special teams contributions.
