Trevon Diggs isn't leaving the Dallas Cowboys anytime soon after signing a five-year contract extension on the first day of training camp.

The All-Pro defender became the fifth-highest-paid cornerback (tied with the Saints' Marshon Lattimore) in average value per year with a $97 million deal that will average  $19.4M per season in new money.

But there's so much to be broken down from the deal and ESPN's Dallas Cowboys insider Todd Archer revealed all the details on Twitter (Yes, I still refuse to call it X) on Wednesday.

Per Archer, Diggs' deal includes a $21.25 million signing bonus and he'll make an additional $1.04 million in salary for 2023. That number shoots up to $11 million in 2024. The rest of the years break down as shown in the tweet below:

Diggs can also make an extra $600,000 per year through escalators. These are similar to incentives, but they are paid out differently as it "becomes a raise for the following year," per Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap.

Per Archer, Diggs needs to do the following to get the escalators:

  • 5 INTs + playoffs: $300,000
  • 7 INTs + playoffs: $600,000

Those numbers won't be any easy for Diggs to make, even though we're talking about the same guy who racked up 11 picks in 2021. Last season, although he improved as a cornerback, his interception numbers went down to three. A quick glance at the leaderboards reveals that over the last four NFL seasons, around 10 players reach five interceptions per year.

However, if someone can make it happen consistently over the length of the contract, it's Diggs who is one of the best ball hawks in the league.

One has to wonder if it will lead to him taking even more risks, too, something he hasn't shied away from anyways early in his career. He did tone it down in 2022 as he improved in coverage but could we see him play with fire more often now that there's a financial element involved?

Trevon Diggs' new deal will raise his cap number for 2023 as a result of the signing bonus and adjusted salary and will occupy $5.8 million for the year.
