Following reports indicating that Dallas Cowboys right guard Zack Martin is "considering not reporting" to training camp, the relationship between player and franchise is entering a new stage.
The Cowboys, who are reporting to training camp on Tuesday, had a team flight for Southern California that Zack Martin didn't board.
That doesn't mean Martin is not going to show up to camp as the official reporting day isn't until Tuesday. However, the flight watch is on for the All-Pro lineman as fans and media wonder if he'll make it to Oxnard in time to avoid being fined.
If Martin doesn't show up, he'll be fined a daily $50,000 fine. Cowboys insider David Helman estimates a hold out for all of the team's time on Oxnard could cost Martin close to $1 million.
The question is if the standout guard believe he can make that back through a reworked deal that could bump his pay toward the top of the market to around $20 million per year. He is currently set to make $13.5 million in cash this season. In other words, the math could end up playing in his favor if he gets what he wants.
Another option the six-time All-Pro Cowboys player has is the popular "hold-in." Showing up but not actually practicing. Would that send a loud enough message, however?
What Martin is trying to do is cut in line in front of CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, and even Dak Prescott, whose contracts' structures make their deals much more urgent. Martin has earned the right to raise his hand after giving the Cowboys four All-Pro seasons since signing his current deal in 2018, including two in the last couple of years.
We'll see how Martin's camp feels about holding out vs. holding in on Tuesday when the Cowboys officially report to camp.
