Dan Quinn would love the Cowboys selection in recent two-round mock draft
The Cowboys snag two key needs in AtoZ Sports’ two-round mock draft.
The Dallas Cowboys are coming off of back-to-back 12-win campaigns. However, with only one playoff victory to show for it, they certainly need to upgrade multiple areas.
One of them is the cornerback position.
With the uncertain futures of Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis, who both suffered season-ending injuries in 2022, the Cowboys need to put more around Trevon Diggs and also DaRon Bland after he shined as a rookie with a team-leading five interceptions.
Dallas met with several top cornerback prospects at the NFL combine including Devin Witherspoon (Illinois), Christian Gonzalez (Oregon), and Joey Porter Jr. (Penn State) to name a few. However, in a recent mock draft by AtoZ Sports film room savant James Foster, the Cowboys took Tyrique Stevenson out of Miami with the 26th pick in the first round.
Foster on the Stevenson selection:
"One of the most underrated players in this class. Really good size and length. Great press coverage technique. He's just so balanced at the line of scrimmage.
"And he hasn't had crazy ball production. Nine pass breakups, three interceptions over the past two years, but that's what you have Trevon Diggs for. Tyrique Stevenson can come in and be a good No.2 cover corner. And then you've got DaRon Bland in the slot. So, I feel pretty about that cornerback room in Dallas."
Stevenson has the size and length that Quinn likes at 6'0" and 198 pounds. Also, he showed good speed at the combine running a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash, although it appeared he ran a sub 4.3 when you slow down the tape.
A top-three cornerback group of Diggs, Bland, and Stevenson would be very intriguing.
The next need for the Cowboys is an obvious one, wide receiver.
CeeDee Lamb proved he was a true No.1 receiver last season with 107 catches for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns. But much was left to be desired outside of him as no other receiver reached 600 yards or had more than four touchdowns.
The Cowboys interacted with top receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba (Ohio State), Jordan Addison (USC), and Zay Flowers (Boston College) at the combine. But, the Cowboys would make a surprise selection in this case and take A.T. Perry out of Georgia Tech.
Foster on the Perry pick:
"And then at 58, I've got the Cowboys taking wide receiver A.T. Perry. Assuming that they stick with Dak Prescott, which I think is likely, you've got to surround him with more weapons on the outside than just CeeDee Lamb."
Perry was very productive for the Deacon Decons. He racked up 71 receptions for 1,293 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021, averaging an amazing 18.2 yards per catch. Last season, Perry was at it again with 81 receptions for 1,096 yards and 11 scores.
The two-time first-team All-ACC performer impressed at the combine by running a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash while carrying his 6'3" frame. Adding him with Lamb and a healthy Michael Gallup would serve the Cowboys well.
