Cowboys: Once-elite offensive line re-discovering its mojo heading into 2023
At one time, the Dallas Cowboys had the best offensive line in the NFL. Over the last several years, they've still been serviceable, but they haven't performed on an elite level. At one time, the Dallas Cowboys had the best offensive line in the NFL. Over the last several years, they've still been serviceable, but they haven't performed on an elite level.
One major reason for that has been injuries, especially to left tackle Tyron Smith who hasn't played a full season since 2015. In 2020, the Cowboys had over 10 different starting combinations because of injuries on the offensive line which led to no continuity among the unit.
The 2023 season brings another opportunity for the Cowboys to reestablish their status atop the offensive line hierarchy. Pro Football Focus believes they will if health is on their side as the Cowboys' offensive line landed at No.6 in their rankings.
Projected Starting Lineup
LT Tyron Smith
LG Tyler Smith
C Tyler Biadasz
RG Zack Martin
RT Terence Steele
Dallas gets multiple players back from injury, even if the specter of getting hurt is never far from Tyron Smith at this point in his career.
The Dallas line began last season at this No. 6 spot before injury caused it to slip, but the talent belongs this high
Best Player: Zack Martin
Zack Martin was arguably the best guard in the NFL while Quenton Nelson was at his best, but now it’s not even an argument. He’s a dominant player at the position.
Martin, Biadasz, Steele, and Tyler Smith played a ton of football together in 2022. If they can get Tyron to stay in the field, and Steele fully comes back from his torn ACL, the Cowboys have a legitimate chance to be one the better units as far as offensive lines go.
They were rumors that the Cowboys were going to start Tyron Smith at right tackle and Tyler Smith at left tackle while letting Steele take a shot at left guard. However, during mandatory minicamp last week, Tryon started at his natural position at left tackle and Tyler slid inside to left guard.
Dallas signed veteran Chuma Edoga in free agency and drafted Asim Richards who will both get a shot to play guard and tackle. So, the Cowboys have done a good job covering all their bases in case of injury.
If the Cowboys want their best five offensive linemen on the field that means the Smith boys should occupy the left side and Steele and Martin should hold down the right side with Biadasz in the middle. Of course, health will be key, and if they have that on their side, the Cowboys offensive line will be one of the best in the NFL this season.
