Even with two playoff games yet to be played on Monday, the NFL world seems to be awaiting the imminent decision from the Dallas Cowboys on head coach Mike McCarthy following an embarrassing loss to the Green Bay Packers.
It is far from an easy decision, however, as McCarthy has led Dallas to a 12-win record in three consecutive seasons. It's such a unique scenario that the Cowboys are in fact the first team in NFL history to achieve such regular season success without an NFC Championship Game appearance to show for it.
As we await Jerry Jones' decision on his current head coach, NFL Network insider Jane Slater reported several important notes on the situation being lived in Dallas at the moment.
Per Slater, whose full thread you can read here, noted players support McCarthy's culture within the franchise, noting that it's "Really interesting hearing them defend him, his culture & how he’s lead them on the field and off of it. Their ownership of failing Mike is what stands out the most."
Slater added that the players' opinion is likely to be factored into Jones' decision-making process in one of the toughest dilemmas the Cowboys have faced recently. Does the small sample size of postseason failures outweigh elite regular season performance? After all, the Cowboys' 36 wins since 2021 are the second most in the NFL, behind the Kansas City Chiefs (37).
Ironically though, while players speak highly of the culture McCarthy has established within the Cowboys, Slater reported an anonymous player was frustrated with Dak Prescott and he took a shot at the quarterback when talking to her.
"Another player was frustrated with a stubbornness to stick to schemes on both sides of the ball," wrote Slater on Twitter/X. "Motion offenses killing defenses and concern that Dak panics when first read (is) not there."
Slater confirmed the comment wasn't made by CeeDee Lamb, as users quickly speculated in response to her tweets.
The concern itself isn't likely to hold up upon further review as one of Prescott's strengths has always been his processing of opposing defenses, even if it's hard to keep a cool head after terrible performance like his from Sunday.
The Cowboys have a lot of decisions to make surrounding their coaching but also, Prescott's future is interesting itself. With a massive cap hit for 2024, the likeliest outcome to this whole deal is a contract extension, regardless of the justifiable playoff concerns in the minds of fans and the media. And of course, the anonymous teammate who revealed his concerns.
